International Women’s Day

Ending hunger and poverty begins with supporting women farmers.

Ramata Niass visits a corn storage center operated by FEPROMAS, an association of farmers who produce and sell corn, peanuts millet, cowpeas and sorghum in Dinguiraye, Kaolack, Senegal.

When Yazmin Judit Hau Tun was just 16, she left her quiet town on the Yucatán Peninsula to move to Cancun in search of work to support her family. This decision — to stay close to family and make a living off the land or travel to the coastal hubs to pursue a livelihood in the tourism sector — is one many young women and men from the rural regions of Mexico face. After all, farming is no easy endeavor.

Agriculture in the Yucatán Peninsula, like farming across the globe, comes with an array of challenges: long hours in the hot sun, unpredictable weather, pests threatening harvests and limited access to established markets to sell produce. For Yazmin, her move promised what she thought would be a more reliable income.
