Heifer Guatemala Featured in 2023 Global Agricultural Productivity Report

Heifer International has been featured in this year’s Global Agricultural Productivity (GAP) Report, an annual report from Virginia Tech’s Global Agricultural Productivity Initiative.

The GAP report is a premier source for productivity data, analysis and policy recommendations. It aims to mobilize and advocate for action and investment to accelerate agricultural productivity growth at all scales of production to create returns to farmers, society, the economy and the environment.

Titled "Every Farmer, Every Tool: Increasing & Sustaining Access to Proven Innovations for Sustainable Agricultural Productivity Growth," this year’s report features Heifer’s work with Guatemalan spice producers to improve their incomes through its Green Business Belt project, leveraging analysis to shape its interventions and help producers drive their own solutions to increase earnings and build resilience to market fluctuations.

With Heifer’s support, 62% of project households were able to close the gap between their actual income and Living Income benchmarks — the amount of money every person in a household needs per day to live a dignified life — by 2022.

The report highlights Heifer’s work as a model for other organizations and governments to emulate. It calls for increased investment in sustainable agriculture and support for smallholder farmers to create returns at all scales of production, society, the environment, and the economy.

"We are honored to be featured in the 2023 GAP Report," said Surita Sandosham, president and CEO of Heifer International. "Our work is focused on building more sustainable and equitable food systems for everyone, and we are inspired by the results of our collaboration with producers in Guatemala who adopted new techniques and trainings to improve decision-making and business planning."
