Heifer International has long taken an innovative approach to ending hunger and poverty. In 1937 founder Dan West was one of the first to realize that relief work wouldn’t solve long-term problems. The phrase he coined, “Not a cup but a cow,” was the summation of his philosophy that providing livestock and training was the most sustainable way to help families achieve self-reliance. Decades later, the organization developed a pioneering approach to fundraising through a gift catalog. Through this unique experience, donors honor loved ones with gifts of livestock that provide real animals and training to families in the developing world. To this day, millions of families have enjoyed the tradition of giving Heifer gifts.
Today, Heifer is still innovating to meet the challenges of a changing world. We are implementing new technology to help us monitor the progress of our field work to allow for even greater transparency and better connect donors with the communities they’re helping to improve. We’re also partnering with the makers of popular games like FarmVille and Goat Simulator to help us fundraise and tell Heifer’s story in creative ways.
We want to share these stories of innovation and add our ideas to the dialogue at the 2015 South by Southwest (SXSW) interactive festival in Austin, Texas—a gathering of the brightest minds in emerging technology and digital creativity. Heifer is part of two proposed sessions and we need your help to get us there!
Please consider voting for our sessions: Measuring Change in a Hyper-Transparent World and The Gamification of Philanthropy.
If you’ve attended a SXSW event in the past, or if you’ve voted in a previous SXSW Panel Picker, you can use your account to log in and vote for this year’s panels. If you haven’t participated in the Panel Picker before, you will need to create an account, which is free and takes no time at all.
Be sure to cast your votes by Friday, September 5. Thank you for helping us make Heifer’s mission part of this exciting event.
