New Local Market Bright Spot For Haiti

Friends of Heifer logo

After suffering twin natural disasters in August, Haiti was in need of something to celebrate. On October 31st they had a reason to.

In collaboration with the Municipal Administration of Anse-à-Pitres, Heifer Haiti opened a marketplace that will be truly transformative for smallholder farmers and entrepreneurs across southeast Haiti.

Heifer has opened the new Anse-à-Pitres Marketplace, a sheltered plaza designed to accommodate 170 merchants. Until the ribbon-cutting, this community at Haiti’s very southeastern border had no marketplace at all, forcing its 30,000 residents — including farmers, bakers, craftspeople and other entrepreneurs — to travel six hours by sea to sell their goods!

See the grand opening!

Three-quarters of the new market’s vendors are women, whose monetary contributions are often what keeps families out of poverty. We expect at least 60 percent of the money spent at the market to stay in the community.

Thank You

The future is looking much brighter for the 30,000 residents of Anse-à-Pitres, Haiti, thanks to a new marketplace — for farmers, bakers and other entrepreneurs — opened with the support of the Municipal Administration and generous Heifer donors like you.
