It's International Coffee Day, and you might be enjoying a nice latte or pour-over to celebrate. For many of us in the United States, every day might as well be a coffee-themed holiday – Americans drink an average of about 3 cups a day.
So then, how is it that the farmers who grow a product in such high demand so often experience extreme poverty? At the last Specialty Coffee Association of America Symposium, Heifer President and CEO Pierre Ferrari discussed poverty among coffee farmers and how to close the gap between their current income and what it should be: a living income that allows them to provide for themselves and their families.
