Learn about the Future of Food

Heifer's mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. See More About Our Mission

Small-scale farmers account for more than one third of Ecuador’s agricultural production but their incomes are minimal and seasonal. As a result, they work to achieve subsistence rather than investing in sustainability.

The Future of Food works with small-scale farmers, emphasizing environmental stewardship and indigenous and conventional farming methods. The project helps farmers come together in member-owned associations and cooperatives so they can aggregate produce and sell to larger markets.

Launched in 2019, the project is expanding access to nutritious, sustainably grown food.  When marketplaces closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, farmers’ regular sales channels disappeared overnight. Heifer Ecuador responded by setting up a home delivery service that connected rural farmers to consumers in cities, providing continued access to food and reliable incomes. Farmers started selling food baskets with fresh produce, honey, coffee and dairy products.

The program’s main activities — training on irrigation, organic fertilizer and pest control and the organic certification processes — provide farmers with the skills and resources to continue producing environmentally friendly food for years to come.
