Creating Lasting Change in Rural Honduras
November Impact Story
Kellyn lives in rural Honduras, where she was raised by her grandmother. For generations, her family was stuck in the vicious cycle of hunger and poverty — a terrible reality for roughly half the population in this region.
While Kellyn’s grandmother worked as hard as she could farming her small plot of land and raising cows, it was never enough for her family. With unpredictable weather and barely any money, they were often just one hurricane, one drought, or one illness away from losing what little they had.
But your generosity has helped provide Kellyn’s grandmother with the education and resources she needed to give her grandchildren the life they dreamed of and deserved — one free from worry and hardship.
She was able to join one of Heifer’s Farmer Field Schools in her area, where she learned how to better care for their cows: By managing the pastures where they graze, preparing proper feed, vaccinating them against diseases, administering veterinary care, and more!
“Before Heifer we didn’t know things like working properly with cows, cattle deficiencies,” says Kellyn. “Now with Heifer we know about diseases cattle get, how to treat it, how to treat deficiencies. We didn’t know much about this before.”
Thanks to your support, and their hard work, the family’s cows began producing more milk. Now, there’s plenty of protein-packed milk for the family to drink, keeping them healthy and strong!
What’s more — this high-quality milk can also be turned into calcium-rich foods like cheese, yogurt and butter. Kellyn’s family makes cheese from their milk to sell for steady, reliable income.
Plus, together with about 30 other farmers in her community, Kellyn’s family produces and sells biofertilizer — along with other eco-friendly farming products they’ve learned to make through Heifer.
Kellyn, now a young woman and mother herself, is following in her grandmother’s footsteps and oversees her family’s cows — something she would not have been able to do without your help.
Kellyn and her entire family are thriving! In addition to selling their cheese, she and her grandmother have become community leaders, earning even more income by providing veterinary services to other dairy farmers in the area. Everyone — including her grandmother — has bright, hopeful futures ahead.
Hopefully, this story serves as a reminder of how much your generosity creates a ripple effect that last a lifetime, breaking generational hunger and poverty … paving the way for lasting change.
