Marbella lives in rural Mexico, where many families just like hers live in extreme poverty.

Life has never been easy for Marbella. Despite working tirelessly to provide for her children, baking bread and weaving hammocks to sell for the little money she could earn, it was never enough. Marbella’s days started at sunrise, but no matter how long she worked or how much she sold, feeding her two children was a daily struggle.

But now, thanks to your generosity, everything has changed for Marbella and her family.

You see, Marbella received chicks from Heifer and training in how to care for them. Today, her hens produce up to 600 protein-packed eggs each week! That’s more than enough protein-rich eggs for Marbella’s children to eat and for her to sell for a reliable income. Gone are the days of worrying about how she will feed her children!

Chicks may be tiny, but they make a BIG impact for families like Marbella’s.

Because Marbella’s hens lay so many eggs, she has enough to support a growing egg-selling business. And she hasn’t stopped baking, either — adding bread to her business. Marbella takes pride in being known as “the bread lady,” selling her now famous orange bread, cornbread and cheese bread alongside her eggs.

Marbella has become quite a businesswoman, but what she takes the most pride in are the skills she’s passing on to her children and the example she now sets for them — skills she gained through your support as a Friend of Heifer®.

Her 10-year-old daughter already knows how to care for the chicks, clean their coop and give them water. Her son helps too, collecting eggs each morning. They have bright futures ahead of them, just as Marbella always dreamed they would.
