Q&A
What are the future steps for Heifer International in Honduras and in the Americas?
Heifer Honduras will continue working with families and communities to reduce poverty and strengthen resilience. Future steps include mobilizing additional resources to expand the geographic scope of interventions and increase the number of families reached. Another important priority is to deepen coordination with both the public and private sectors to create synergies and scale impact.
In the Americas, Heifer will continue its programs across the six countries where it is currently present. The focus will be on strengthening the capacity of smallholder producers, ensuring their inclusion in sustainable food systems, and fostering locally led development. By building leadership at the community level, Heifer aims to create long-term solutions that are both resilient and community-owned.
Is Heifer doing any solar programs in Honduras?
Yes, Heifer is supporting the adoption of solar technologies to improve production systems. This includes providing solar-powered electric fencing for cattle producers, as well as installing solar water pumps. These pumps allow families to access water for both livestock feeding and small-scale irrigation systems. By integrating renewable energy solutions, Heifer is helping producers lower costs, improve efficiency, and strengthen climate resilience.
What are the challenges that still need to be overcome?
Some of the main challenges include:
- Expanding the project to new intervention areas to reach a larger number of producers.
- Increasing access to microcredit so producers can invest in essential equipment, such as forage choppers, artificial insemination kits, and electric fencing.
- Facilitating market linkages that ensure smallholder dairy producers have access to stable and reliable channels for milk commercialization
Strengthening access to finance and scaling services remain critical to ensuring that more families benefit from the project’s impact.
Could you please share the key strategies used in the Leveraging Success project that have sustainably improved the incomes of small dairy producers in Honduras?
Key strategies include:
- Providing specialized technical assistance to improve productivity and animal health.
- Linking smallholder producers with stable markets for milk commercialization.
- Organizing producers into associations or cooperatives to strengthen collective action and bargaining power.
- Facilitating connections with financial institutions to improve access to credit and investment opportunities.
These strategies have helped families increase both production and income in a sustainable way.
How are families chosen to receive an animal?
The selection process for families is based on several key criteria:
- Having access to land
- Demonstrating their commitment to animal care and to the Passing on the Gift® principle (sharing resources with other families)
- Willingness to participate in training and capacity building
- Availability of food and adequate shelter for the cow
- Being an active member of a community organization supported by Heifer
This process ensures that families are prepared to care for the animal and maximize its benefits, while also contributing to community solidarity and sustainability.
Do you work in Ecuador?
Yes, and you can find more information about our work in Ecuador here.
Are there ways we can help in addition to donating? How can we use our networks to help you in an effort like this?
There are a number of ways that you can continue supporting Heifer outside of your donations. We offer ways to get involved and engage your community groups, including schools and faith communities.
You can also engage with content on our social channels and share content with your networks.
How many families do you help each year?
In FY24, we supported 1.3 million active participant households. Since 1944, we’ve supported 52.6 million households. You can find more information in our Annual Reports.
Do the animals come from the U.S.?
No, we secure animals in-country or in the region where they are being given.
When we began in 1944, we did send animals from the United States to the areas we worked. The men and women that accompanied these shipments were called Seagoing Cowboys. They are a significant part of our history, and we are thankful for their contributions. Animals were shipped by sea and air.
Does Heifer partner with other nonprofits to achieve their objective and goals?
Heifer works with strategic partners at all levels to connect smallholder farmers to opportunity, strengthen market systems and achieve sustainable impact at scale. Our partners share our commitment to sustainable and environmentally sound solutions and include farmer organizations, women’s groups, businesses, governments, funders, researchers and more.
Can you list all the countries that Heifer is active in?
Heifer currently works in 19 countries, including the United States. You can learn more about where we work at heifer.org/our-work/where-we-work.
How much is climate change affecting Heifer’s strategies?
Caring for the earth is a major component of our work. Our expert staff work with farmers as they integrate climate-smart agricultural practices on their farms to increase resilience and crop production.
We support biogas plants that provide clean energy to local households, and irrigation projects that use water more efficiently. We also teach farming practices like rotational grazing which prevents soil depletion and helps rejuvenate the land. We also work to reduce farm waste by feeding scraps to animals like chickens and pigs, and we use animal manure as fertilizer in gardens to help grow vegetables and fruit.
We promote agroecology and work with farmers to protect local ecosystems and biodiversity, deploy soil and water conservation techniques, and reduce carbon footprints.
We received several questions about where to find photos and videos to share with community groups.
You can find information on how to share with others or get your community groups involved at heifer.org/take-action/get-involved. We have programs and resources for any community group, including faith communities and school programs.
You can access Heifer photos on Flickr.
You can view videos on Heifer’s YouTube channel and on Vimeo.
How are families chosen to be highlighted?
We want to highlight as many families as we can because it shows the impact that your support makes.
When we visit projects, our country staff help us identify families that show various aspects of our work, and families across the spectrum of their Heifer involvement, including those just joining a project to those that were part of projects many years ago. The beauty in telling these stories is that it highlights the immediate and long-term transformation of Heifer families.
