Project Update:
Thank you for making a lasting impact!
Your generosity sparked a journey of transformation in India. What began as a simple gift — whether a goat or garden seeds or honeybees — became food on the table, new ways to make income, and hope for generations to come.
This year, you’ve followed Sandhaya’s story, from receiving her first goats from a donor like you to building a thriving business and sharing her knowledge with others. Her journey shows just how powerful one act of kindness can be.
And your gift sparked the same transformational journey for a family just like hers! Thank you!

When Sandhaya joined the Bihar Sustainable Livelihood Development project, she had no idea how much her life would change!
Backed by your generosity, Sandhaya has become a pillar of progress in her community. Not only does she work as a community animal health worker, but she also launched an animal resource center outside her home. She also leads educational sessions for women’s groups.
Today, Sandhaya’s health has improved, her income continues to increase and her confidence is soaring. Her own goat-rearing business is growing. She’s nearly paid off her loans and uses the increased income to pay for her children’s private school tuition.
Your gift is doing all of this and more for a family in India!
20% drop
in goat mortality rate in Sandhaya’s community — from 25% to 5%.
400 families
in 11 villages rely on Sandhaya for animal support.
$120–$180
monthly income for Sandhaya as a community animal health worker.
755,000
families helped in India since Heifer began projects there in 1955.
We sent Sandhaya the questions you and fellow donors asked earlier this year. And all the way from Bihar, India, she’s answered them! See if your question made the list below.
“Greetings! We are wondering how many goats you now have?”
— Kris, Marj, Linda & Louise from Ohio
I currently have 20 goats, including six young kids. I started with just four goats, but over time my herd has grown, and they are now an important part of my family’s livelihood.
“How old are the first goats you received now?”
— Dan from Ohio
I received my first goats in 2021. Some of them have since been sold, while others have given birth to kids.
“What kind of goats do you have? I love goats!”
— Aspen from Florida
I raise Black Bengal goats, which is a local breed that does well in our region.
“Where do you live in Bihar? Is there an area where your goats can graze?”
— Ralph from Illinois
I live in Kishanpur Mohaniya village, in Muzaffarpur District of Bihar. Our area is known as the litchi capital of India. There are grazing areas nearby, but I also provide my goats with green fodder and azolla so they stay healthy.
“What do you do with the goats? Do your kids help?”
— Elizabeth from Colorado
I raise the goats for breeding and selling, which provides income for my family.
“Dear Sandhaya. I am so happy that you are building a beautiful life for you and your family. I am wondering how you were able to get enough goats to start a goat business."
— Jane from Massachusetts
With Heifer’s support, I was able to get a loan of 20,000 rupees (about $240). I used this to buy my first four goats and build a small shed. From there, with training and care, the herd grew.
“Were the four goats you bought with the loan the first goats in your herd? Do you raise other types of animals like chickens, ducks or sheep?”
— Cynthia from Texas
Yes, those four goats were the first in my herd. Right now I focus on goats, but in the future I might raise other animals as well. Goats are very special to me because they gave me the confidence to start my business and are my area of expertise.
“How are your goats doing? Having lived on a ranch, we had a couple of goats and we enjoyed their antics!”
— David from Arizona
They are healthy and strong. I follow practices I learned from Heifer, like regular vaccinations, deworming and providing nutritious fodder.
“How do you take care of your goat? What does the goat provide for you?”
— Jean from Texas
I give my goats nutritious fodder, clean water and proper shelter. I also vaccinate and deworm them regularly. The goats provide income when I sell them, and they have helped me build a better future for my children.
“Have your children been able to go to school?”
— Ruth from Florida
Yes, both of my children are in school. My son, Priyanshu, is in class 9, and my daughter, Khushi, is in class 7.With the money from my goats, I can now pay for them to both attend private schools. I pay 500 rupees ($6.02) for each child each month.
“Sandhaya, I admire your commitment to education. Do your kids like school?”
— Amy from North Carolina
Yes, they do. Khushi especially loves learning and dreams of becoming a doctor or civil servant one day. Priyanshu hopes to be a businessman.
“Are your children helping you with your animal business?”
— Mike from Florida
They do small things like feeding the goats or playing with them, but I want them to focus on their studies. My daughter has a special bond with the goats and gives them pet names.
“Are you children able to also learn how to become a part of the business you’re working in?”
— Karen from Iowa
My daughter dreams of becoming a doctor or civil servant, and my son wants to be a businessman. I hope that seeing my hard work and how I run my business will help them both.
“Sandhaya, what are your dreams for your children?”
— Mary Beth from Massachusetts
Like many Indian parents, I hope my children will learn English. I believe it will give them more opportunities in the future.
“What opportunities are you most looking forward to giving your children with the additional resources provided by the Heifer project?”
— Hannah from Illinois
I want my children to have more opportunities than I did. When I was a girl, I dreamed of becoming a doctor, but my family could not afford the cost of those studies. Even buying school supplies was sometimes too much. My mother would tell me to “manage with whatever you have.” That experience still stays with me. I don’t want money to hold my children back. Now, with the income from my goats, I can pay their school fees and give them the resources they need. My greatest hope is that they will be able to follow their dreams without the barriers I faced.
“What kept your hopes up to go back to finish high school and then get training from Heifer?”
— Karisa from Iowa
I always believed education was important. Even when I faced challenges, I wanted to continue learning. Heifer’s training gave me new skills and the courage to try something different by raising goats.
“Sandhaya, how did you first hear of Heifer International? I’m happy to be one of the people that has helped you reach your goals.”
— Harriet from New Jersey
I first learned about Heifer in 2021 during a self-help group meeting in my village. That is where my journey began.
“What has been the most challenging part of your journey to independence?”
— Franklin from Maryland
At first, I doubted whether goat farming could really help us. Also, it was not easy to gain confidence in a community where women often do not work outside the home. My husband’s support in this patriarchal society was very important for my growth. And once I saw results, my courage grew.
“Hi! What will you do with this animal and how will it help your family? I’ve donated to Heifer for years but never had a chance to communicate with a beneficiary!”
— Sam from Virginia
The goats provide income when I sell them, and the training has allowed me to offer veterinary services to others. Together, these help pay for my children’s schooling and improve our daily life.
“Hi Sandhaya! As a community animal health worker, what are your main responsibilities throughout the week?”
— Jan from New Jersey
People call me whenever their goats are sick or need vaccinations, and I go to help. I remember the first time someone called me. The goat had a temperature of 105, and after I gave the injection it started trembling. I was so scared I had done something wrong, but soon it recovered and was healthy again. That moment gave me confidence. Now, when people call, I feel proud knowing they trust me to care for their animals and their livelihoods.
“Hi! I love that I was able to help you to get a goat. How has it helped your situation? I’ve always thought that a goat would be a great animal to own!"
— Suzanne from New York
The goats have completely changed my life. They gave me income, independence and confidence. I am known in my village as someone who helps others with their animals, and everyone knows my name.
“Sandhaya, how are you doing with your new business?”
— Gleni from California
It is going well. I make money from being a community animal health worker, from the animal resource center I set up outside my home, and from the goats I raise and sell. It gives me enough to support my family and send my children to school.
Your Impact in Action
From caring for her goats to building a thriving business, see how far Sandhaya has come — all thanks to you!
The Journey Doesn’t End Here
Sharing Sandhaya’s journey with you throughout the year has been such a privilege, and I hope you’ve seen just how much your kindness impacted a family just like hers.
While it seems like the journey of your gift may be coming to an end, your impact will continue to unfold for generations to come. The family who received your gift promised to pass on the first female offspring and what they’ve learned to another family in the community. This means the impact of your generosity will continue to resound throughout India as more families lift themselves out of poverty. All because of you!
From the family whose lives you changed and from all of us at Heifer — thank you for your dedication to ending hunger and poverty, one gift at a time.

“There’s a deep joy in knowing my contribution is helping others achieve security in their work and home. I love reading these stories of change for families in situations that seemed untenable before Heifer.”

“If I can help one family know that there are people in the world who care, give one family hope for a better life, one child the opportunity to get an education to lift herself and her family out of poverty, is well worth it to me.”
