Thank You for Making a Lasting Impact in Cambodia!

See the difference your chicks made in a year

Since receiving your generous gift of chicks, the family has focused on diversifying their farm and starting a business selling eggs to increase their income. Now, they share their good fortune with others, as you did for them.

From the family whose lives you changed and from all of us at Heifer for understanding why we do what we do — THANK YOU.

To help us tell the story of amazing change, would you take a short survey about what you’ve learned about your gift this year?

Thank You

Thriving Thanks to You

Set has seen success with chicks, but the knowledge gained extends far beyond the flock. With sustainable farming techniques to improve her crops and training to keep her animals healthy, she’s diversified and expanded her income. She’s grown her flock to 165 hens, 35 roosters and 700 chicks — and she sells 700 to 800 chicks each month. Set also sells feed, vaccines and medicine to other farmers. She’s more than doubled her income, with much of it going to her children’s education.

THE POWER OF COOPERATIVES

Set quickly emerged as a leader, now heading a cooperative of 249 families. The cooperative gives farmers a place to reliably sell their chicks for fair prices, paying $3.50 to $3.75 per kilogram (2.2 pounds) for the chickens, as opposed to the $3.25 or so a broker would give. Always the business savant, Set secured deals with two local restaurants so the group can sell to them. But the cooperative provides more than just a market — it’s a community rallying together to help, whether by giving food, seeds, loans or advice.

A FUTURE HATCHING WITH POSSIBILITY

Set now regularly looks for business opportunities — for herself and her cooperative. She continues sharing her knowledge with others so they can better their lives, too. She dreams of one day having a proper house with rooms with walls instead of simple hanging fabrics. With kindhearted people like you rooting for her, she believes it will happen.

Years from now, you might not remember the gift you gave. But the family in Cambodia who received your chicks will never forget the person who changed their lives.

The Journey of Your Chicks

  • The family receives their own flock of chicks
  • The chicks grow up to lay more than 200 eggs a year – each
  • The family joins a cooperative and earns extra income selling eggs
  • The family diversifies their farm and starts a business
  • The family passes on their gifts to others
  • The family THRIVES!  (You are here!)

So Much More Than Chicks

When Set joined the Poultry Project of National Pride where your chicks went, she was excited about the idea of receiving livestock. However, she gained assets and benefits far beyond the animal itself — as did the family who welcomed your flock of chicks!

When the family welcomed your gift of chicks, they also received other resources to ensure their farm’s success.

Along with her chicks, Set also received:

A COOP

Her new coop features raised cages on either side and an enclosed area for the chickens to graze.

VACCINATION SUPPLIES

With vaccines, vitamins and deworming medicine, Set keeps her flock healthy.

A HATCHERY

Able to hatch 1,000 eggs at a time, the hatchery leaves the chickens free to produce more eggs.

EGGS

Set’s children enjoy fresh eggs every day. Set leaves the rest of the eggs in her hatchery, where they hatch into chicks she can sell.

FERTILIZER

The droppings from Set’s chicks make great FREE fertilizer. Set spreads this to help her garden grow.

HOPE

Set and her family finally see a future where they don’t have to struggle every day — a future filled with hope (and chicks!).

Why Cambodia?

After more than four decades, Cambodia is still recovering from the brutal totalitarian reign of the Khmer Rouge. Today, 80% of Cambodians live in rural areas, with more than half the population relying on agriculture for their livelihoods. However, only 10% of the agriculture products sold in Cambodia are local. Heifer wants to help Cambodian farmers establish a role in the market.
