Thriving Thanks to You
Rosa has seen success with her honeybees, but the knowledge gained extends far beyond the hive. With sustainable farming techniques to improve her crops and training to keep her cattle healthy, she’s diversified and expanded her income. A veterinary kit from Heifer allows her to treat cows in her community for basic illnesses. She earns about 4,000 lempiras ($163 USD) a month doing this. Rosa also makes and sells her own biofertilizer.
BANKING ON SUCCESS
Accessing financial services can be extremely difficult for farmers, especially in rural areas like where Rosa lives. The solution? Savings banks where farmers can pool their money and provide low-interest loans to members. Rosa’s beekeeping group uses this bank to reinvest the money from their honey sales, and Rosa invests the money she earns from selling biofertilizer, as well. The bank currently has 27,000 lempira ($1,097 USD) and 17 members. Rosa serves as the bank’s secretary.
A FUTURE ABUZZ WITH POSSIBILITY
Rosa’s beekeeping group hopes to use their savings to expand their beekeeping operation. For Rosa, everything she does is for the generations who will follow her. She dreams of having a local secondary school and other opportunities for the young people in her community. With kindhearted people like you rooting for her, she believes it will happen.

So Much More Than Bees
When Rosa joined the Leveraging Success project where your honeybees went, she was excited about the idea of receiving livestock. However, she gained assets and benefits far beyond the animal itself — as did the family who welcomed your honeybees!
When the family welcomed your gift of honeybees, they also received other resources to ensure their farm’s success.
Along with her honeybees, Rosa also received:
farming tools
Farm work is much easier with tools like shovels, machetes and ditch diggers.
A VETERINARY KIT
Rosa treats cows in her community for basic illnesses, adding to her income.
A FODDER CHOPPER
Rosa now chops and stores fodder to feed her cattle during the dry season.
HONEY
Bees bring lots of honey! Rosa’s group recently harvested 60 liters of honey, which they sold for 150 lempira ($6) a liter.
POLLINATION
Bees pollinate crops. In time, they can double fruit and vegetable yields, giving Rosa’s family more to eat and sell.
HOPE
Rosa and her family finally see a future where they don’t have to struggle every day — a future filled with hope (and bees!).
Why Honduras?
A history of military rule, corruption, poverty and crime have resulted in Honduras being considered one of the most underdeveloped and unstable countries in Central America, with almost half the population living below the poverty line. Many Hondurans depend on agriculture as their primary source of income. One way to boost their agricultural endeavors is through beekeeping.
