YOUR GOAT IS MAKING a LASTING IMPACT in NEPAL!

When you gave a goat months ago, you may not have realized just how great an impact your gift would have. When you give through Heifer International, a gift of a goat is never just a gift of a goat — it’s the ability to create a future where the family thrives.

From the family whose lives you changed and from all of us at Heifer — THANK YOU.

For women farmers like Bhagawati Parajuli and Uma Sinalai Nagar, the goat you gave allows them to look to the future. Before Heifer, Uma had no income source and her family was always short on money. After she received goats, she expanded her business.

While it may seem like the journey of your goat is coming to an end, your gift will keep on giving. The family who received your goat promised to pass on the first female offspring and share their newfound knowledge with another family in the community — continuing the cycle of change you set in motion.

Years from now, you might not remember the gift you gave. But the family in Nepal who received your goat will never forget the person who changed their lives.

Bhagawati Parajuli’s Story

Bhagawati's family is a part of the Empowering Women Farmers in Nepal Phase II project where your goat went!

  • After her husband died in an accident when she was just 19, Bhagawati was left to raise their daughter alone.
  • After years grieving and trying to stay financially afloat, she joined a women’s savings group.
  • Bhagawati’s family had raised goats before, but not in any organized way, and she knew little about it. The training changed everything. With the goats came the benefits — milk, fertilizer and hope!
  • Now, Bhagawati is the main support for her family, and she uses her knowledge to better her family and community. And it’s all thanks to a gift like yours.
  • Bhagawati expanded her goat herd from three goats to 30. The increased income from selling goats and fodder paid for the house’s second story and helped establish a new business: a banana plantation. After seeing success, she continued to expand and diversify her farm.
  • Bhagawati’s determination quickly established her as a leader within the community.

About the Empowering Women Farmers in Nepal Phase II Project

TIMELINE 2018–2023

WHERE 28 districts in Nepal

OUR GOAL In Nepal, a family of five needs an annual income of about $3,640 USD for basic needs — but the average income is only about $3,440 USD. The goal of the Empowering Women Farmers in Nepal project is to help families reduce this gap.

Building on the success of the initial stage of the project, we have now launched a second phase that sees us working with farmers to meet demand for milk and live animals, with the goal of ending poverty for half a million families by 2023.
