Luis’ Story of Success, All Because Of You
Luis’ family is a part of the Leveraging Success project where your bees went!
- Luis grew up on his family farm in a remote region of Honduras, where they struggled to get by. Luis tried to better his life by attending university, but he had to drop out because he couldn’t afford it.
- He returned home to practice agriculture like his parents. Luis worked hard to take care of his cattle, but he wasn’t making money.
- The Leveraging Success project was the turning point for his family. Heifer taught Luis how to care for and make money with honeybees — just like the bees YOU gave!
- With the bees came the benefits above — honey, pollination and hope! Working together, Luis and his fellow farmers focused on caring for their bees and increasing their hive productivity.
- The lessons Luis learned extend far beyond the hive. Now, he uses his knowledge to better his farm and his community. And it’s all thanks to a gift like yours.
- Luis was chosen to be a promoter for his cooperative, and he now helps other farmers in the community keep their animals healthy.
- In the future, Luis hopes for more bees. He already knows what he will do with the income: return to university and finish his education.

WHERE Olancho, Choluteca, Santa Bárbara, Copán and Lempira, Honduras
OUR GOAL In Olancho, a family of five needs an annual income of about $4,400 USD for basic needs — but the average income is only about $2,350 USD. Our goal is to help families reduce this gap.

The Leveraging Success project helps close the income gap in Honduras by helping farmers and business owners. Local experts give honey, coffee and dairy farmers support to boost their yields, teaching them environmentally friendly techniques that deliver high-quality products — generating future demand for those same products and starting a cycle of success.
Accessible markets are essential for closing the living income gap and making sure that producers can continue to sell their products once their time in the project has ended. Connecting honey producers with restaurants and food suppliers generates demand and long-term income opportunities.
