“I can’t demonstrate my happiness,” Margret said. “Because Heifer supported us, I am thankful.”
Thriving, Not Just Surviving
Margret has seen success since receiving her gift of a mating bull, but the knowledge gained extends far beyond the herd. With sustainable farming techniques to improve her crops and training to keep her cattle healthy, she’s diversified and expanded her income. Margret and a group of women received tools to make yogurt, which they make and sell every three days. And with her increased income from selling milk and the yogurt, Margret started building a new house and bought several goats.
THE POWER OF COOPERATIVES
Finding a market for their milk can be extremely difficult for farmers, especially in rural areas like where Margret lives. The solution? Cooperatives where farmers can reliably sell their milk for fair prices. The cooperative pays its farmers 800 Ugandan shillings (22 cents) per liter of milk, as opposed to the 400 Ugandan shillings (11 cents) per liter Margret previously received from a middleman. But the cooperative provides more than just a market — it’s a community rallying together to help, whether by giving food, seeds or advice.
MOO-VING TOWARD A BRIGHTER FUTURE
Margret hopes to soon have enough money to complete her house. She also wants to buy more land and cows, which will allow her to continue increasing her income. Eventually, she wants to be wealthy enough to be able to give every guest who visits her farm a chicken. With kindhearted people like you rooting for her, she believes it will happen.

So Much More Than An Animal
When Margret joined the Accelerate Dairy Production and Productivity project, she was excited about the idea of receiving livestock. However, she gained assets and benefits far beyond the animal itself!
Along with her mating bull, Margret also received:

ELEPHANT GRASS SEEDS
Margret grows two and a half acres of the grass, which she feeds her livestock.

A FODDER CHOPPER
Margret and her husband can now chop their fodder much quicker than by hand.

MANGO AND AVOCADO SEEDS
Now fully grown trees, Margret and her family can enjoy or sell these fruits.

INCREASED MILK
Since adding elephant grass to her cattle’s diet, Margret has increased the milk collected by three to eight liters more per cow.

FERTILIZER
Margret’s cattle produce plenty of dung, which makes great FREE fertilizer. Margret spreads this to help her crops grow.

HOPE
Margret and her family finally see a future where they don’t have to struggle every day — a future filled with hope.

Before a family receives a gift — whether it’s a snuggly sheep, garden seeds, a biogas stove or anything in between — they participate in extensive training. Ultimately, we want the family to succeed — and we want to be good stewards of each gift.
