Traditionally, farmers like Indira sell their goats at weekly local markets. Without any training, farmers are often paid unfair prices for their goats, or sometimes can’t sell them at all. It’s hard to make enough money to be able to feed their families.

With Heifer’s Empowering Women Farmers in India project, family farmers receive training and form collectives with one another so they can negotiate fair prices for their goats and put more money in their pockets.

For example, one collective holds a market every three months. They set prices with local traders ahead of time based on an animal’s weight, so they know they will get a good price. Now, family farmers like Indira know they can count on their goat sales to earn a steady income for their families!
