In 2012, the Arakelyan family from Lernantsq, Lori region, received five sheep from Heifer Armenia—an investment that greatly improved their lives.

Vardan Arakelyan lives with his wife, son Vahe, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren—Ani, 2, and Narek, 1.

"Heifer's assistance was exactly what we needed," Vardan said. "We had two sheep and wanted to increase our farm, and with Heifer's support we did it."

The family's sheep gave birth to four lambs. The grandchildren like the cheese that Vardan's wife prepares from the sheep's milk. Ani also adores the dishes prepared from lamb meat.

The family wants to sell lambs, which are currently in high demand in Armenia. Vardan and Vahe grow potatoes and wheat and sell their harvest for additional income. They generate about $1,100 per year from the sales.

The family will fulfill their Passing on the Gift® (POG) responsibility and provide five sheep to another needy family from their village.

"We are planning to enlarge our family farm as much as possible and start a serious family business," Vardan said. "No doubt, it is profitable. The sheep are sources of nutrition and income. We are also planning to sell the wool. Thank you, Heifer, for your support!"

Improve the lives of Armenian farmers.
