A 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25 affected Heifer project areas. The damage was devastating, and we are saddened to report the deaths of at least 65 project participants due to the earthquake. The worst damage was in the central districts of Dhading and Nuwakot, where we work alongside farmers to develop goat and dairy enterprises. Early assessment of damage includes thousands of homes that are completely destroyed, as well as loss of livestock and livelihoods. Heifer’s efforts are focused on providing temporary shelter, food and water for communities in need. Longer term work will include rebuilding the communities and providing livestock and related training.
