Crisis in Ukraine Not Yet Affecting Heifer's Work

As an organization working in more than 30 countries, Heifer International is constantly monitoring political and social activity for any potential impact on our colleagues and work to end hunger and poverty.

The escalating crisis in Ukraine has so far occurred in urban areas away from Heifer communities. Ukraine Country Director Viktor Teres reports that “staff and our project communities, including Danone, are safe.”

Teres shares via email, “Ukraine will be making enormous progress towards economic progress. However, the first years will be really challenging, so support of donors is desperately needed. My staff and I will work with communities and new local and central government leaders in development of joint projects.”

Much of the economy in the Crimean peninsula relies on tourism, which will certainly be negatively impacted by recent events as they enter the spring/summer tourism season. Communities will require assistance in reviving family-owned tourism, smallholder farms and other small market economies.

We all wish the people of Ukraine the best as they reach for peace and prosperity. We stand by our colleagues as their efforts to lead lives of dignity and freedom come to fruition.

Additional updates will be provided as needed.
