Heifer International, with The Alliance to End Hunger, is holding the event “Livestock for Livelihoods” on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., on July 23 at 9:00 a.m. ET. The event is sponsored by Sen. John Boozman (R-Ark.) and has the purpose of raising awareness of U.S. policymakers, administrators, institutional funders and development agencies on the role of livestock in agricultural development—specifically on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. There will be keynote addresses and a panel discussion. The event is taking place at 485 Russell Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C.
The audience will include members and staff of U.S. Congress, staff from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), representatives from United Nations agencies including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and World Food Programme (WFP), as well as attendees from nongovernmental organizations.
Sen. Boozman, as co-chair of the Senate Hunger Caucus, will give a keynote speech. In addition, a high-level USAID representative will address the audience. Following the keynote addresses, there will be a panel discussion, moderated by Heifer President and CEO Pierre Ferrari, with representatives from academia, the private sector, multilateral agencies and the smallholder farming community.
