On July 12, 2013, the Semuy II, El Estor, Izabal community in Guatemala received fingerlings (young fish) for their newly established farming ponds.

The project is an activity of the bioforestry project, Forestry, Biodiversity and Adapted Agriculture Preservation in the Indigenous Communities from the Basin in Bocas del Polochic River Region.

Staff from the Defenders of Nature Foundation demonstrated how to properly release fingerlings into the pools.

Most El Estor community members established ponds near their homes.

However, beneficiary Carlos García lives in the Balandra community. He had to carry his fish a long way—traversing a trail and wading through a river. But his fish arrived safely and are alive and well in their new cultivation pond.

Felix Poou, a student at the Official Mixed Rural School in the Guaritas Community, El Estor, Izabal, also received fingerlings. He and his fellow students will raise the fish for food and, as a result, improve their nutrition.
