Families in the Chirinos district of Peru's Cajamarca region are expanding their coffee farms to include livestock and vegetables. These successful diversified production systems give farm families additional sources of income, making them more resilient to climate situations. Heifer Peru project participants like Lucila Cruz have built bio-gardens where they grow alfalfa, lettuce, radish, cilantro, spinach, beetroot, and other vegetables. Raising guinea pigs provides protein and income. Better incomes enable families to live healthier and happier lives and outfit their homes with efficient appliances like improved cookstoves.
