Heifer Nepal and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), working together for the third time, are rehabilitating conflict-affected families. Past projects implemented through this partnership created substantial project groundwork and supported 775 families. Of those families, 500 were families of people who had gone missing during the 10 years of civil unrest between the then Maoist Rebels and the government.

The livelihoods of many of these families were disrupted when a family member, who many times was the only breadwinner, disappeared during the conflict. This project will support 250 additional families. Out of those 250, 125 are the families of people who went missing during the conflict in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Kaski, Lamjung and Tanahu districts. ICRC’s Psychosocial Support Framework and Heifer’s development model based on its Theory of Change have proven to be the perfect combination of intervention and support to help the families manage their emotions and grief while simultaneously helping them improve their livelihoods and rebuild their communities. As a part of this project, 22 members of ICRC staff and implementing project staff received Heifer’s Cornerstones training in a workshop from January 3-9, 2013, in Pokhara.
