Students at the QSI International School of Chengdu in China showed great enthusiasm for reading to raise money for rural, poverty-stricken people through Heifer’s Read to Feed program. This is the first time the Read to Feed program has operated in Chengdu. Around 350 students from the elementary and secondary school participated in this program, which began November 5, 2012.
QSI International School of Chengdu has a long history of organizing charity events, and the opening ceremony for Read to Feed was quite successful. During a special presentation, students were introduced to Heifer China and they learned how to participate in Read to Feed, as well as how the donations can help farmers become better off after receiving sponsorship. After learning about Heifer’s work, the students became excited to read to raise money to donate animals.
QSI International School of Chengdu, a non-profit institution, began in 2002 and offers education in English for students from two to 18 years of age. QSI stands for Quality Schools International, and the school promotes the development of healthy relationships throughout the community: student-to-student, student-to-teacher, teacher-to-teacher, teacher-to-parent and school-to-community.
Heifer's Read to Feed program was implemented in China to cultivate fundraising in Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu. The program has already been introduced to the curriculum of three international schools in Shanghai and one in Beijing. With the program's arrival in Chengdu, more students, teachers and parents will get to know Heifer China and join us to help impoverished families in rural China.
