This year, Indiana FFA Association is excited to work with 3rd and 4th grade students to help improve reading skills and fight global poverty by hosting Heifer International’s Read to Feed® program in schools throughout our state!
Read to Feed encourages reading and engages elementary school students in actions that make a difference in the lives of others. As our chapters introduce and support Read to Feed in the classrooms, we all benefit. When students read more books, they will not only improve their reading skills but more families will receive gifts of livestock and training by what we raise together. We are excited about the impact this could have on the global community.
It's up to you to decide how your chapter will raise funds.

To partner with Heifer International by adapting the Read to Feed program with chapter-selected schools and provide FFA members an opportunity to impact elementary students by raising awareness of international agricultural issues. The Read to Feed program we introduce in classrooms throughout our state will be aligned with 3rd and 4th grade state standards for language, arts, science, social studies, and math.
Our very own FFA members are taking on the role of Read to Feed Leader. And we will be honoring the FFA Chapter and corresponding school whose students either spend the most time reading OR have the most money raised per student with:
Cash prizes put towards a hunger initiative in the community to top 3 schools in both categories:
1st place - $150
2nd place - $100
3rd place - $50
1st place in both categories: Press conference and banner presentation at the winning elementary schools with a state government official
Top 3 schools in both categories within each chapter: eligibility to apply for trip to Heifer International Headquarters and Heifer Ranch Global Gateway Experience
This year the Executive Committee made a goal to fight poverty and illiteracy on an international scale. To do this we need your help. We hope you participate in the Read to Feed program with the Indiana FFA Association and Heifer International!

How Heifer Works to Strengthen the Livelihoods of Smallholder Farmers
By organizing and mobilizing people, resources, and talents
we leverage the power of local people and knowledge, working together toward a common goal.
By training small farmers
on improved environmentally-friendly farming methods, we help farmers see improved incomes that lead to a better quality of life.
By working directly to strengthen entire communities
we are making large-scale improvements to rural livelihoods by empowering farmers and helping them gain better access to the market.
By increasing awareness of gender equity
we help women develop leadership skills and become empowered so that they can have access to greater opportunities such as education and entrepreneurship.
