LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (July 25, 2012) Curious kids can now explore the powerful hunger-fighting work of Heifer International through the beloved characters Flat Stanley and Flat Stella. Heifer International and Flatter World Inc. are collaborating to create new experiences for children though classroom activities and the Flat Stanley app.
Flat Stanley was first introduced into childrens literature in 1964, and since 1995 has been traveling the globe as students mail paper Stanleys from school to school as part of the Flat Stanley Project. The character is a symbol of goodwill and education across cultural barriers. Now Flat Stanley has entered the digital world and Heifer International is joining him there.
The free Flat Stanley iPhone and iPad app offers new ways for kids to learn about Heifers work. With the app, kids (or kids at heart) can design their own Flat Stanley or Stella and then start taking pictures around their community with their Flat character appearing in the photo. Heifer International will have a special character costume available for purchase in the game with a portion of the proceeds going to support its work in developing countries.
Within the app, children can also send their Flat characters around the world, including to Heifer International project sites. Kids can choose from eight different Heifer International adventures: Haiti, Malawi, Kenya, India, Cambodia, Armenia, Peru and Romania. Users can receive pictures of their characters exploring Heifer projects, and discover facts about Heifer Internationals work. At the end of the tour, theyll get a journal entry explaining everything their Flat character did. And all the adventures can be shared with others!
"Flat Stanley is the perfect way to relate complex issues to a younger audience," said Martin Benik, Director of Business Development at Flatter World Inc. "We are excited to be working with Heifer International providing a unique learning experience for both adults and kids. In my experience the best way to teach kids anything is by making it fun, so they dont even realize how much they are learning."
One of Heifer Internationals goals is to show people how they can make a huge impact on problems like world hunger if they just get involved, said Rich Cason, Heifer Internationals Director of Internet Marketing. The Flat Stanley characters make Heifers project communities come to life for kids.
