Mercer MOOOOves Mountains with Heifer International!
During the month of March in 2013, the students and staff at Mercer Elementary School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, began a campaign to raise money and awareness for Heifer International and its mission to end world poverty and hunger.
With the values the students are learning as an International Baccalaureate World School to “help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect”*, Mercer hoped to raise enough money to buy animals for a needy village in a developing country.
The students raised money through earnings. Simple chores and "entrepreneurial endeavors" provided a way for students to give back and to learn the true meaning of giving. This was a student-driven fundraiser. Mercer students brainstormed ways to raise money individually and in groups. The students learned through research and dialogue about the many ways they could make a difference in the world and how to be responsible global citizens. The students learned how the purchase of a single animal can provide a chance at independence and sustainability and can empower individuals, families, communities and entire regions of the developing world.
The Heifer Project got underway with a challenge. The first $500 raised not only bought a cow for a needy family, but our school principal dressed up in a cow costume when the goal was met! The many acts of generosity, selflessness and effort provided a grand total donation to Heifer International of $1,400. The 4th graders held an all-school election and Mercer students voted on buying one cow, one water buffalo, one pig, two goats, two sheep, a flock of chickens and some honeybees! The excitement and dedication to the Heifer Project has ended, but Mercer students and staff continue to be committed to changing the world for the better. One animal at a time!

Dear Heifer International, I'm happy to enclose a check for $200 raised by our first grade students through a cookie sale and family donations! Our students were very enthusiastic in the roles they played to help purchase animals for needy families.Their awareness of the needs of others was heightened and the realization that children can make a difference in our big world was made clear. Thank you for your assistance with our project! Sincerely, Mary Smith, First Grade Teacher

I was one of the adults who visited Heifer Ranch in Arkansas from June 18-20 with the Ottawa Kansas First United Methodist Group. I wrote the following poem about our experience and I plan to read it on August 2nd when we give our presentation to the church. Someone suggested I send it to you!
