One of Africa's westernmost countries, Senegal has a primarily Muslim population, the majority of which lives below the poverty line. Heifer Senegal was initiated in 2007 to end poverty and to promote sustainable agricultural techniques in small villages. Because this project was recently founded, this Study Tour offers a special opportunity for participants to learn about a Heifer project in its early stages. Senegal Study Tour participants will travel to remote communities and witness the positive impact of Heifer's work as they visit livestock and cropland projects. Land of marshy inlands and mangrove swamps, Sierra Leone is also home to incredible mountain peaks and vast savannahs. Unfortunately, this country has suffered tremendously from political and social upheaval throughout the past century. Since 2007, Heifer has been working in Sierra Leone to end hunger and restore the environment. Following the civil war of the 1990's, many citizens of Sierra Leone lost family members and animals; Heifer endeavors to restock livestock populations and to reach out to youth who fought in the war through educational programs.
