From Literacy Facilitator to Village Chief

Heifer Cambodia project participant Reoun Theourk, 31, left school in the sixth grade because of her family's poor living conditions. In 2011, she was selected to be a Literacy Facilitator and began changing her life with the help of Heifer Cambodia and Disability Development Services Program. Her community rewarded her efforts and elected her as a village chief.

Cambodia Celebrates Passing on the Gift®

During the month of March, Heifer Cambodia and its partners celebrated events which mark the social achievements of self-help groups and reflect on continued community development. One event was conducted by the Disability Development Services Program Organization, which included about 500 participants who passed on gifts to other families in need.

Training Creates Understanding in Partnership

Heifer Cambodia conducted a five-day training on Values-Based Holistic Community Development (VBHCD) for the staff of the Gender and Development for Cambodia (GADC) and for a new provincial project coordinator and community facilitators under a brand new three-year grant contract project between Heifer Cambodia and GADC.

Cambodian Women's Empowerment Project Launches with Support from European Union

A joint project proposal from Heifer Cambodia and Gender and Development for Cambodia was awarded about $1,441,720 by the European Union to implement the project, Promotion and Protection of Women’s Rights and Socio-Economic Empowerment, which aims to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment to participate in sustainable socio-economic development in Cambodia.

Cambodian Woman Lifts Her Family Out of Poverty

Ouk Sam On, a farmer living in Cambodia’s Ampao Prey village with her husband and two children, is lifting her family out of poverty, thanks to a Heifer project. She and her husband now have a farm with vegetables, fish, swine and poultry production. Her husband gave up drinking and gambling and helps with the farming. Now her family has enough food for the whole year and an appropriate income to invest in their children’s education.

Son Sinath Wins Golden Talent Award in Cambodia

Son Sinath and her family received the 2012 Golden Talent Award in Cambodia. Through the Women Empowerment and Holistic Community Development project in Cambodia, Sinath's family received 10 ducks, seeds and fruit trees to develop their homestead garden. They have used the knowledge, skills and experiences from Heifer's trainings to propel them forward, transforming their gifts into sustainable sources of income.
