Heifer Philippines Continues to Help Resilient Communities in the Pacific

As part of the effort to make partner communities disaster-resilient, Heifer Philippines and the South Pacific Integrated Area Development Foundation, Inc., held a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Assessment and Planning in Hinunangan workshop in Southern Leyte, Philippines, January 29-30, 2013. Participants learned ways to make their communities less vulnerable in the face of disaster.

Cambodian Woman Lifts Her Family Out of Poverty

Ouk Sam On, a farmer living in Cambodia’s Ampao Prey village with her husband and two children, is lifting her family out of poverty, thanks to a Heifer project. She and her husband now have a farm with vegetables, fish, swine and poultry production. Her husband gave up drinking and gambling and helps with the farming. Now her family has enough food for the whole year and an appropriate income to invest in their children’s education.

Solar-Energy Bathrooms Improve Hygiene, Protect Environment

In many communities of the remote mountainous area of Yunnan, China, renewable energy sources like biogas, firewood-saving stoves and solar power are now available, thanks to the efforts of Heifer China and the local government's investments in recent years in rural energy improvement. The Shanghai branch of Hansgrohe, a bathroom and kitchen company, donated 1,785 water faucets to improve the quality of these showers.

New Boars Maintain Swine Quality in Philippines Community

Due to the amount of original and pass-on families in Heifer's projects in the Philippines, the risk for inbreeding of swine is high, as pigs are the main project livestock. To avoid this, Heifer participants received new boars to improve the genes of the offspring.
