The Cow Lightens a Family’s Burden Amid Fear

The Voskanyan family lives in the village of Chinar, Armenia, amid daily unrest caused by the fear that Azeri snipers may at any moment break the cease-fire between Armenia and Azerbaijan and they will be shot at again. The village is located directly at the bottom of the hill from where the snipers watch the inhabitants, and there has been sniper fire over the last year. The Heifer project brought them a cow that eases some of the family's burden.

Smiling Garlic Brings Profit to Armenian Youth

Fourteen-year-old Avetis Harutyunyan, from Verin Getashen, Armenia, received a seed grant through a Heifer project to start his garlic business. His first attempts to sell weren't successful, so he implemented a marketing plan that worked like a charm and brought big profits in his first season.

Joint Workshop for Georgian and Armenian Veterinarians Successful

The Heifer International project, Animal Health Management in Cross-Border Areas of Armenia and Georgia, held a joint workshop for veterinarians in Borjomi, Georgia, April 4-5, 2013. Andris Zalitis, veterinary-surgeon of Vidzemes Veterinaries Service, Latvia, led the workshop in cooperation with the Center for Agribusiness and Rural Development foundation and with the financial support of Austrian Development Cooperation.

Young Shushan’s Innovative Approach in Her Business

Sixteen-year-old Shushan Khachatryan of Armenia, presented a business plan and received a $100 grant to start her business through Heifer Armenia’s Young Agriculturists Network of Armenia (YANOA) project. Her business plan included a unique and innovative idea to boost her haricot, a type of bean, sales. "Everybody in the neighborhood talked about my new business approach of providing recipes to the customers," she said.

Artificial Insemination in Armenian Village Producing Positive Results

The first indicators of the Milk for Money project’s artificial insemination positive results were recorded in the village of Sarnakunq in Armenia's Syunik region, with the majority of cows delivering healthy cross-bred cows that will bring higher productivity in milk and/or meat production. Day by day, more and more farmers are convinced artificial insemination generally gives the best results to improve animal productivity.

Family Receives New Home and Honey

For many years, Heifer Armenia and the Fuller Center for Housing Armenia have been striving to better the well-being of rural families.The project helped the Markosyan family renovate their old, partially destroyed house and they also received four beehives from Heifer Armenia.

Heifer Georgia Celebrates New Agricultural Machinery Service Providing Center

Heifer Georgia recently celebrated the opening of the Community Based Agricultural Machinery Service Providing Center. The new center procured a 110 horsepower tractor, seven agricultural machines, a hangar to house the machines and an office building with the support of the government of Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Program.

Young Entrepreneur Makes Profit at Easter

Lusine lives in the Zorakan community of Armenia's Tavush region. She is one of the young entrepreneurs engaged in Heifer Armenia’s YANOA (Young Agriculturalists) Project. In the framework of this project, the youth involved in the business direction of the Heifer-supported YES! (Youth Empowered for Self-Reliance) Clubs, received seed grants to realize their business plans. Lusine saved the money she generated from selling the chicks, and will add a little more from the egg sales to be able to pass on the same amount of money she received to another member of the YES! Youth Club in her native village. She'll use the rest of the money to purchase feed and medicine for her poultry.

Young Armenian Girl Achieves Egg-cellence

Veronika, 14, received a youth grant through Young Agriculturists Network of Armenia and began a small poultry farm. Through dedication and hard work she has seen her small business grow and looks forward to the high demand of Easter eggs.
