WiLD: Women in Livestock Development

Heifer International’s Women in Livestock Development or WiLD initiative celebrates women and empowers them to make real changes in their community.

In many of the countries where Heifer works, women and girls have far less control over the family’s income and resources than their brothers, fathers and husbands. And opportunities to attend school, secure a paying job and gain independence can seem far out of their reach.

Heifer originally established WiLD in 1988 to help women care for themselves, their families, the Earth and each other. But since that time, WiLD has expanded, focusing less on women alone and more on forging strong (and equal) partnerships between men and women. Heifer believes these partnerships are a key ingredient for successful community development.
