Farm animals, like pigs, are “living bank accounts” (piggy banks!) for poor families. Pigs provide income from the sale of offspring, natural fertilizer to nourish crops and soil, and they are a valuable source of protein.

Pigs need only a little land and can live on crop and garden scraps. An average sow (the mature female that has already had at least one litter) can provide a family with up to 16 piglets a year. Pigs usually double their 3-pound birth weight in their first week, and grow to more than 200 pounds in 6 months.
