Heifer International started working in Zambia in 1988 through the Christian Council of Zambia (CCZ). In its development work approach, Heifer Zambia prefers to work with community groups such as registered self-help and women groups. The assistance includes livestock, mainly draft and dairy cattle, goats and other related livestock species, whereby the recipient families will agree to pass on female offspring to other needy families at an agreed age. In addition to livestock, Heifer Zambia provides materials and training to equip the assisted farmers to manage the donated livestock sustainably, to accrue the intended benefits of raising food and income. The Heifer Zambia program focuses on creating a viable community, strengthening the family unity, increasing human dignity, promoting diversified and integral farming systems, promoting and hiring indigenous people for the workforce, reducing urban migration and caring for the earth.
Heifer International has operated in Malawi since early 2000 through partnership with the local, nongovernmental organization Small-Scale Livestock Promotion Programme (SSLPP). SSLPP is among the few local NGOs involved in the livestock sector and has promoted livestock programs with dairy cattle, goats, pigs and poultry. Following the Heifer model, SSLPP has worked with these communities in a number of activities, such as: importing and distributing high-grade livestock to smallholder farmers, providing training on managerial and advanced technological skills to livestock beneficiaries, and providing veterinary and extension services.
