In countries that have been ravaged by war and conflict, bringing an end to hunger is one of the first critical steps on the road to recovery and self-reliance.
And with the gifts of livestock and training, Heifer International is helping bring peace to embattled countries, like the African nation of Rwanda.
Esperance, a young mother from Rwanda, struggled greatly trying to provide for her little children in the aftermath of the brutal tribal wars between the Hutus and the Tutsi in Rwanda.
You see, Esperance is Tutsi, and she was forced to send her children into hiding during the war in order to flee from the Hutus. And even when she was reunited with them, tribal tensions were still too high for them to live in safety. That was when Esperance found out she was HIV positive. She was fearful of what may happen to her children if she died.
But then she discovered a nearby Heifer women’s Project, The Muhazi Women’s Dairy Project.
Thanks to Heifer’s generous supporters, Esperance received the gift of a cow. Up until receiving their animal, milk was the family’s largest expense. But after their cow arrived, they immediately had enough fresh, vitamin-packed milk to drink every day. But it really wasn’t until her Jersey cow gave birth that Esperance finally breathed a sigh of relief. The little calf would be passed on in order to help another family. She didn’t know if they would be Hutu or Tutsi. She didn’t care. To her, they were all part of the Heifer family. Help bring an end to hunger for other families.
The Muhazi Women’s Dairy Project saved Esperance’s life, and the lives of her children, giving them the opportunity for a safe, sustainable future.
Heifer International’s gifts of livestock truly are essential building blocks on the road to peace – enabling families to regain their livelihood and sense of security.
Support Heifer’s programs today by helping to send livestock to more war-torn nations across the globe, bringing peace and prosperity to families in need.
