Keep the Fleece
Keep the Fleece is an international effort to raise $250,000 to supply communities in need with gifts of fiber-producing animals from Heifer International. Teams of knitters, crocheters and weavers create 9-inch-wide scarf sections and raise money by soliciting donations by the inch.
By the time the Keep the Fleece project is all sewn up in October 2009, organizer Linda Cortright expects to have miles of natural fibers of all varieties knitted into one fuzzy, warm scarf that will raise both awareness and money for the work of Heifer International.
"I really think it's going to be an impressive work," Cortright said in June. "Even if we were to be stopped right now, I could run it around the block and then some."
The world's longest scarf record to beat is nearly 33 miles, set by a group of Welsh knitters in 2005 and recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.
When all the teams are done, the various pieces will be joined together into the world’s longest scarf. And all the proceeds will go to Heifer International. Support this effort by donating to Keep the Fleece's Team Heifer page or start your own team.
