Challengers increase their awareness of environmental and hunger related issues through the use of globally themed team-building initiatives and challenges that provide an emotionally safe environment that encourages reflection of self-awareness.
Low elements include a series of activities that require sharp listening skills and stepping out of the participant’s comfort zone. Group initiatives will require everyone to work together to find solutions to accomplish a task. A low ropes element will test a participant’s agility, balance and physical strength and have them confront emotional issues such as the fear of failure. All the low element components help participants get to know both members of their group and themselves better. Low elements are included in both the half and full day programs.
High elements include either two uplifting elements (6th grade and older) or the high challenge course (8th grade and older). Uplifting elements include a 40-foot climbing wall, giant swing, giant’s ladder or flying squirrel. The high challenge course includes an access climbing wall to four connected elements that are suspended 30 feet in the air. Participants descend the high challenge by the 300 foot zipline. Heifer Ranch selects the appropriate uplifting elements or high challenge course for the group based on their group’s needs assessment. High elements are included in the full day program.
Discussions after each activity help participants understand and articulate what occurred during the activities. Participants learn how these principles apply to personal growth, group success, and problem-solving, such as Heifer International’s effort to eradicate world hunger.
