China's Sichuan province was hit May 12, 2008 by a devastating earthquake. Thousands were killed and millions were left homeless. It is estimated that the direct loss of animal husbandry in Sichuan totals more than $2 billion. As a large province, with agriculture and livestock production as its pillar industries, Sichuan is suffering enormously because of this disaster.
Heifer recipients in the area are suffering as well.
The vast majority of families in China are desperately poor; they are subsistence farmers who depend on their land and animals for survival. Without replacement livestock, they face a grim future.

Heifer’s initial earthquake relief effort has already helped many of these families successfully start the recovery process. But sustainable, long-term solutions are now needed on an unprecedented scale.
Since beginning work in China in 1984, Heifer has successfully implemented nine disaster rehabilitation projects that have served more than 10,000 struggling families with dramatic results. Helping families recover from this earthquake disaster will be Heifer’s greatest challenge yet.
