Uganda - HPI Eastern Uganda Umbrella Project
 |
| Sustainable farming practices allow families in need to feed themselves, and sell their surplus produce to lift themselves out of poverty. |
In the Eastern Region of Uganda, more than 70% of rural families are involved in subsistence farming as their main source of livelihood. The major source of income is from the sale of maize and casual labor (especially for the youth) employed on sugar cane plantations and by a few rich people on their farms.
The three-year Umbrella Project will be comprised of five groups (three dairy cattle and two goat projects). During the three years the project will distribute two types of livestock to 308 resources limited households (215 of which will be original gifts and 93 pass ons).
Farmers will pass on the gift according to Heifer principles. For each received heifer, a farmer will pass on a female offspring of the same age and quality to another farmer. In addition to the heifers, farmers receiving goats will pass on the first eight offspring in a ration of two females and one male. Both will also pass on related knowledge and skills in integrated livestock farming.
