Romania - Carpathian Project
 |
| Through Heifer, families who have known only poverty will be building new homes and starting businesses. |
In the heart of the Romanian Carpathian Mountains, farmer communities in the Dorna Depression, Brosteni and neighboring counties Poiana Teiului and Tulghes are facing many challenges. Through a partnership with the Mountain Farmers' Federation (FAMD) and Heifer Romania, this project will create jobs and provide income while fostering traditional activities such as local Turcana sheep breeding, trout fish production and a lamb fattening farm. A total of 99 families will receive the gift of 750 Turcana sheep and 75 rams (75 families) and trout fish (24 families). All activities will be supervised by Heifer Romania and FAMD staff members to ensure that the project develops according to plan. The project will offer the same opportunities to all people regardless of nationality, gender, religion or race.
Passing on the gift will take place according to Heifer International tradition. For each sheep or ram received, a three-month old sheep or ram will be passed on to a new family and naturally inseminated at a later date. For trout fish, the farmers will pass on half of the value of what they received (fish and pellets). From 2 pass-ons, another farmer’s family will receive a full pass on of trout fish. This pass on procedure has worked the best for other Romanian trout fish projects in the past.
