Through this project, Heifer International will help 110 rural families in the villages of Borynia and Komarnyky, in the Turka raion, Lviv oblast, improve their knowledge of agricultural production and processing, and green tourism. The project also envisages establishment of an education and production center to provide training on small scale milk and meat processing for participants and the larger community.
A total of 55 rural families will receive 25 Simmental breed heifers, 50 bee packages, 10 gilts, 1 boar and ornamental plant saplings. An additional 55 families will benefit from “passing on the gift.” Heifer will also provide project participants mixed fodder for their animals, veterinary medicines, equipment for artificial insemination, and agricultural inputs.
Each recipient will pass on the first 19-month-old heifer (inseminated at the age of no less than 16 months, being at least three months pregnant), and 10-month-old gilt (inseminated at the age of no less than 9 months, being at least one month pregnant), or bee packages and funds for purchasing a bee queen to another needy family. The number of passed-on animals will be the same as the number received. The recipients of ornamental plants will pass on the same number of seeds and saplings as received. The list of pass-on families will be approved at the general meeting of all project participants. A local veterinary doctor, the project holder and the HPI Ukraine office representative will monitor the offspring’s health to ensure the quality of passed on animals and ornamental plants.
