A donor traveled to Honduras this past year on a Heifer Study Tour to see the work of ending hunger and poverty in action. This donor, a long-time Heifer supporter, and a supporter of organizations working to help the people of this Central American country, was moved by what she saw. She was inspired by women who broke traditional gender barriers to raise chickens and improve their yucca and cilantro crops. She saw communities diversify their farms to improve the soils and increase the harvest to take to markets, and farmers who learned to farm beneath the forest canopy to preserve forestlands. She saw people’s lives improved by increased income, better nutrition, and communities empowered to stand up to local governments to sell their surplus food for profit at market.
Because of her experiences in Honduras, a new matching gift opportunity was established for this project. When you donate to help fund this project, our donor will double any gifts up to $400,000.
While Honduras struggles as the second-poorest country in Central America behind Nicaragua, this opportunity means your gift could go twice as far to give families livestock and a variety of crops where they once had to subsist on meager plots of corn, beans and coffee. And where there were once no job opportunities, there will be local markets where they can buy and sell foods for improved income and nutrition.
The main objective of this project is improving food security for 2,385 poor farmer families from 80 communities in 10 municipalities in Southern Honduras. Communities in this region suffer from limited food and income sources caused by extended drought and lack of access to productive natural resources. But despite these obstacles to overcoming poverty and recent political challenges, Heifer's work in Honduras has not been seriously affected. Our staff in Honduras will continue to monitor the political situation. This project will focus on farming diversification, promotion of agroecological practices and establishment of local markets to improve the nutrition and income of people in this area. Families will be trained on topics like Heifer's values-based methodology, organizational strengthening, gender equity and sustainable farming practices.
Partner with this donor to make double the impact. Choose your giving level on the right and your gift will be matched.
With Heifer’s help, families will have the capacity to grow ample amounts of food, have the ability to set up local markets to sell surplus crops, and have increased income from profits they make from the sale of their goods.
