Efraín Díaz Arrivillaga, Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Efraín Díaz Arrivillaga is an At-Large director representing the Americas region.
Professionally, Efraín is the Founder of the Human Development Center (CDH) and has been the President of its Board of Directors since 1985. He has served as the Executive Director of the Rural Business Development Foundation and Vice-Minister of the Natural Resources Ministry. He also worked to develop the first national report on human development as the Executive Director of the UNDP’s National Human Development Project.
Efraín brings to Heifer extensive agricultural and economic experience. He attained a bachelor degree in Economics from Georgetown University and went on to earn a master’s degree in Agriculture Economy from Kansas State University. Soon after completing his master’s degree, he took his agricultural knowledge to serve in the Chief position at the Agricultural and Livestock Planning Department of the Superior Council for Economic Planning, and later spent four years with the National Autonomous Honduran University as an Agriculture Economy Professor. Efraín coordinated the design and implementation of the Honduras National Rural Development Program and served as its first Director. He has researched poverty and various rural sustainable development topics extensively and has authored many documents and publications on economic and rural development.
Throughout his career, Efraín has served as an advisor to multiple organizations, including the Honduras National Congress; the United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organization on Rural Development; and, most recently, the Honduras Civil Society’s Poverty Reduction Consulting Group; among others. He is a permanent analyst of national and international issues who is interviewed frequently by Honduras media. He regularly speaks in seminars, workshops and similar events.
Politically, Efraín served as a Honduras National Congressman and was a Presidential Candidate. He was a member of the Central American Parliament for five years, during which time he was the President of the Human Rights Commission for two years.
Efraín operates a family dairy farm and enjoys reading, listening to music and playing basketball. He was the first President of the Honduras Basketball Federation.
