Heifer Ranch's Farm Programs

Farm Programs vary in focus to provide farm training or to introduce the general public to farm life and Heifer’s mission to end hunger and poverty in a way that cares for the earth.

Each program’s agenda varies and may include educational activities such as a hay wagon tour, Heifer Global Village Tour, Heifer-in-Action presentation, service projects, hands-on activities or classroom and farm instruction.

All programs include some physical activity, lifting and walking. Check each program listing to see what level of physical activity you should anticipate.
 
Participants must be at least 16 years old; those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

All programs below are held at Heifer Ranch, located in Perryville, AR.

Farm Instruction Workshops
Pastured Poultry Workshop: March 10-12, 2008
This comprehensive training on small-scale poultry production includes topics such as production, processing and marketing of pasture-based poultry products. Levels of physical activity include minor levels of lifting and minor amounts of walking. Tuition fees vary by program.  Learn more.

Learning Programs
Women’s Lambing Programs – Late March – Early April, 2008
These programs introduce women to Heifer’s work around the world. Activities include basic wool crafts and/or cheese-making classes, light farm chores and sessions to broaden knowledge of Heifer’s mission. Throughout the program participants will visit pastures and possibly witness the birth a lamb. Levels of physical activity include moderate levels of lifting and high amounts of walking. Service Learning Programs
From Bees to Honey: October 5-10, 2008

Learn what it takes to raise bees by helping with our fall honey harvest. Remove honey boxes from the hives and extract the honey. Inspect and prepare the hives for winter. Prepare honey for selling - bottle the honey, seal the bottles in melted beeswax and label for sale. Levels of physical activity include high levels of heavy lifting and high amounts of walking. The $410 per person tuition fee includes all programming, lodging, meals and transportation to and from the Little Rock Airport.

Livestock Health Care: October 5-10, 2008
Learn about the routine care of livestock, such as cattle and sheep, while you help us complete our fall livestock health checks. Weigh livestock, trim hooves, paint brand and ear-tattoo sheep, pregnancy check cattle and evaluate body condition and general animal health. Perform daily livestock chores and other duties such as moving and setting up temporary fences. Levels of physical activity include high levels of heavy lifting and high amounts of walking. The $410 per person tuition fee includes all programming, lodging, meals and transportation to and from the Little Rock Airport.

Service Programs
Winterize the Gardens: October 19-24, 2008
Work in four gardens at the Ranch – Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) garden, Kitchen garden, Sloping Agriculture Land Technology (SALT), and the Saint Francis garden. Weed beds, plant garlic and cool season vegetables, harvest and wash vegetables. Winterize the gardens - this includes rolling-up drip tape in the fields and planting a cover crop in all the gardens. Levels of physical activity include high levels of heavy lifting and high amounts of walking. The $310 per person tuition fee includes all programming, lodging, meals and transportation to and from the Little Rock Airport.

Maintenance Week: October 19-24, 2008
Put your construction skills to use and help our education center stay in top shape for all our visitors. The week may include general building construction, renovation or demolition. Basic construction skills are required. Levels of physical activity include high levels of heavy lifting and moderate amounts of walking. The $310 per person tuition fee includes all programming, lodging, meals and transportation to and from the Little Rock Airport. Call for specific project information.
