Heifer Ranch Agricultural Workshops
Register for a Heifer International Agricultural Workshop held at Heifer Ranch in Perryville, AR to gain sustainable farming skills while learning more about Heifer’s agricultural methods. These workshops are recommended for beginning to intermediate level farmers or hobbyists.
All programs below are held at Heifer Ranch, located in Perryville, AR. The $375 per person tuition fee includes all programming, lodging and meals. Early registration is recommended as each workshop is limited to 12 participants. Beekeeping Workshop: April 12-15, 2010
Learn the basics of beekeeping. Our three day introductory beekeeping course will cover bee biology, hive management, equipment needed to build and start a bee hive, plus hands on work of building and assembling bee boxes and frames. We will also suit up and open existing hives and install a new colony of bees. Bee suits are provided but you are welcome to bring your own. Levels of physical activity include low levels of lifting and moderate amounts of walking.
Organic Gardening Workshop: May 3-6, 2010
Learn the basics of certified organic vegetable production. Course covers seed selection, planting in the greenhouse, transplanting seedlings into trays and then into the field, organic fertilizers, weed and pest control, harvest and marketing techniques, irrigation and layout of the land, and small scale equipment for vegetable farming. The program provides a good mixture of classroom and field instruction. Levels of physical activity include low levels of lifting and moderate amounts of walking.
From Bees to Honey: October 3-7, 2010
Learn what it takes to raise bees by helping with our fall honey harvest. Remove honey boxes from the hives and extract the honey. Inspect and prepare the hives for winter. Prepare honey for selling - bottle the honey, seal the bottles in melted beeswax and label for sale. Levels of physical activity include some levels of lifting and moderate amounts of walking.
Livestock Health Care: October 3-7, 2010
Learn about the routine care of livestock, such as cattle and sheep, while you help us complete our fall livestock health checks. Weigh livestock, trim hooves, paint brand and ear-tattoo sheep, pregnancy check cattle and evaluate body condition and general animal health. Perform daily livestock chores and other duties such as moving and setting up temporary fences. Levels of physical activity include high levels of heavy lifting and high amounts of walking.
