Global Gateway at Overlook Farm
Overnight Program; 6th Grade and Older

For many of the world’s people, cooking a meal is fairly simple. But for the world’s poor, everyday conveniences, like water from a sink, ingredients from a refrigerator and a stove, are unavailable.
For one or two nights, Global Gateway participants experience the daily struggles people in poverty face everyday. Participants are given little – just some rice, vegetables and eggs – and before they can eat, they must find a way to build a fire and cook their meal. The challenge continues on into the night as they sleep in simple housing, such as a Tibetan yurt made from yak hair. By living the lessons of poverty first-hand, participants come to understand the complications surrounding hunger and poverty and see their connection in creating change that brings possibility and hope to millions around the world.
