In poor farming villages around the world, goats are very often the animals that can make the difference in the life of a family. Able to thrive in places where cows and pigs would find survival a challenge, goats are by comparison small gentle animals.

And that makes a family’s goats an ideal responsibility for children.

Kids start out feeding and watering the goats, then take on the task of milking. And they give special care to the young goats also known as “kids.”

Recognizing the special role of goats in the lives of farming families and their children throughout the world, Heifer makes a special appeal each year asking people to give to our Kids to Kids Campaign. By doing so, you can help families in many places in a multitude of ways.

Consider These Facts

• A single dairy goat can provide a family with over a ton of milk per year. That’s thousands of pounds of nourishment, with plenty left over to sell at market.
• Goats can eat what other animals and people won’t or can’t.
• Goats produce manure that can be used to make farmland more fertile thereby increasing crop yields and providing families with more sources of nutrition and income.
• One nanny goat can deliver as many as three kids per year — helping to quickly fulfill the Heifer promise of Passing On The Gift as other families in a village receive young goats and the training to tend them.

• In Ghana, where children on their way home from school pluck tender shoots of grass to bring to the goats who produce the income that sends them to school.
• In Armenia, where a blind boy is able to help his family see possibilities by tending the goats who produce the milk his mother sells at the market and makes into cheese to feed her family.
• In the Phillippines, where Isidro and Gemma are able to send their three children to school because the plentiful yield of their now organic crops is made possible by the free goat manure that has replaced the chemical fertilizers they once had to buy.
• In Dan Ba, China, where a family has been able to take the two bucks and ten does they received from Heifer and by carefully breeding them with local goats been able to create a herd of 200 in three years.
• In Peru, where a family in a land so arid that it had not seen rain in two years has been able to double, even triple, crop yield by using the fertilizer produced by their Heifer goats and the irrigation and conservation techniques taught by Heifer.
