Honduras: Esteban's Testimony

Esteban Antonio Elvir, a partcipant in a Southern Honduras project through the Asociacion de Desarrollo Pespirense (ADEPES), lives in the community of Plan Verde Rodeo. The project began its activity in sustainable agriculture and livestock production here in 2008 with an aim to promote farm diversification, agroecological practices, local markets, and capacity building. The following is Esteban's testimony.

"My name is Esteban Antonio Elvir. I am 38 years old and married to María Altagracia Aguilera. We have four children. I have been in the group of farmers assisted by ADEPES with Heifer’s support for two years. I began [by] working on a small family vegetable garden where I applied some of the sustainable agriculture techniques, such as mulch management, seed distribution, and use organic fertilizer. In my vegetable garden, I grow sweet potatoes, pineapples, yucca, beans, fruits and other crops."

"I have seen change. With the techniques we have learned, we produce more sweet potatoes, yucca and bananas. I also learned how to grow crops that I had never grown like onions, chilies and hibiscus. . I’m motivated because this project has come to unite the family around producing foods for consumption."

"I also feel fortunate because I have been given a cow, which is of great benefit for my family. I never imagined that in my family we would have a cow because we didn’t have the financial resources to buy one."

"We’ve named my little cow Gift from God because. . thanks to Him we have this cow that has been such a big help. They brought her to me and just five months later [we] were drinking milk."

"We also got the hens from the project, although we got them on credit. That has also been a big help. Now I don’t buy eggs. In my family, we are so thankful, first to God because, thanks to Him things happen, and then to ADEPES and Heifer who care about the well-being of the families who have few resources."
