Heifer International Nepal’s project in the central region of Nepal is assisting 9,100 families. Over the duration of the project, an initial 3,200 families will receive 3,400 goats, 2,000 pigs and 500 water buffalo. They will also receive fodder and forage seeds and saplings. Heifer Nepal will also help this community construct 500 improved cooking stoves and 750 biogas units. An additional 5,900 families will benefit through Heifer’s Passing on the Gift model.
Danuwars are among the most marginalized ethnicities in Nepal. Once, they were rice farmers, but more recently, due to lack of education and failure to change with the times, they have been reduced to farm laborers. As a result, they are virtually non-existent in the country’s social and political dialogue. Through a holistic approach to community development, Heifer is assisting 8,900 families to improve their incomes and social condition.
The Chitwan, Nawalparasi and Palpa districts of Nepal are characterized by poverty, caste discrimination and illiteracy. Heifer is working with 1,385 families in this region to implement a holistic strategy for creating positive cultural change. These families are developing skills and knowledge that enable them to improve their health and overall well-being.
Heifer International is working in some of the poorest areas of Peru with high rates of child malnutrition. With recurring cold spells, this area is characterized by harsh weather conditions that are not conducive for agriculture and raising livestock. Through increasing the biodiversity of llamas and alpacas and planting better crops, Heifer is increasing food security and providing opportunities for income generations.
The small farmers living in Piura in northern Peru live in poverty and have limited production resources. Their production systems are vulnerable to drought cycles, and families lack social assistance, as the state does not include the region in its programs. Heifer is cooperating in a project to assist 5,000 families to improve their quality of life and to teach more sustainable agricultural practices.
The harsh climate of the eastern Carpathian Mountains in Poland contributes to low yields and is only tolerated by certain kinds of animals. Heifer is providing families here with bees and beef cattle, two suitable solutions for the climate. Heifer is also helping to create an educational tourism industry in the area, taking advantage of the beauty and natural treasures in the region.
Heifer is creating new realities for people in the Carpathian Mountains in Romania. People in this region are finding ways to market their skills to create income. Environmental concerns are also central to this project, as Heifer works to preserve the highland pastures.
Heifer International is hard at work to bring food and income security to resource-poor families in the northeast, northwest, central and eastern provinces of Rwanda. There are many obstacles to productive agriculture in this area. More than 1,200 families will benefit from this project that is helping to create a sustainable dairy enterprise in this challenging country.
Residents of five villages in the Western Rural district of Sierra Leone all struggle for survival as a result of rapid population growth, a high incidence of communicable diseases and increased pressure on natural resources and infrastructure. Heifer is at work to assist 844 families in this area through a variety of strategies.
Heifer Tanzania helped hundreds of families to improve their nutritional status and incomes through its work in 10 villages. Thousands of fish fingerlings and numerous beehives were provided, along with training, to help people improve their lives and provide for their families.
