Project Overview:
Heifer International Tanzania has worked with poor farmers to increase their income while also improving the environment. Tanzania is rich with natural resources and abundant wildlife, but the environment there is sensitive, especially with increasing climate change pressures.
Over the course of the project, Heifer delivered beehives and thousands of fish fingerlings to 10 villages. Farmers were trained on the basics of agroforestry, tree planting, beekeeping, fish farming and bio-intensive agriculture. All of the trainings in this project incorporated gender equity and HIV/AIDS awareness.
This project has provided training in ecological farming methods and low impact, high yield farming activities like beekeeping, fish farming and forms of livestock production that emphasize zero grazing. By sharing livestock and knowledge in this area, Heifer helped raise the income and nutritional status of poor families in Tanzania.
