From the Field

Tran Thi Cuc Huong and her husband, Nguyen Van Lieu, joined a Heifer project in Vietnam unofficially in May of 2012, after another project family forfeited their cow. This family is constantly innovating, building on old methods while implementing new business and environmental conservation techniques. They have used the support of Heifer Vietnam to enhance their efforts, with very promising results.
Whether they struggle daily to feed and care for sick children or have built thriving businesses as Heifer project participants, the mothers of Rwanda are proud of their children and determined to do everything they can to provide for their families. Leigh Wood, Heifer's donor engagement manager, shares what she saw during a recent visit with these incredible mothers.
On May 2, 2013, Marleen New, director of global partnerships and alliances, anda Carol Moore, manager of global partnership development, both from Heifer International headquarters, visited communities involved in Heifer Vietnam projects to see the implementation firsthand and hear the stories of participants.
A team from Heifer visited successful dairy farms in Southern Philippines to better prepare them to design and implement a dairy project that will ensure success for at least 1,000 beneficiary families. “This is the first time Heifer Philippines will be implementing a dairy project, just knowing that 1,000 original families will benefit from this deepens our dedication to explore, learn and apply best practices from successful dairy practitioners,” Heifer Philippines Country Director Herc Paradiang said.
Socorro married when she was 15 years old and became a mother to five children. She was completely dependent on her husband's income, which did not fully support the family. Through Heifer Peru, Socorro learned about agroecology and received the gift of ducks. The family's income and living conditions improved as she applied the knowledge she gained through Heifer's trainings.
